JAG Architects was requested by the Pala Band of Mission Indians to rehabilitate two of their endangered historic structures dating back to the beginning era of the reservation. The Blacktooth House is the last remaining house of the original houses built in 1903 when the Cupeno Indians relocated to their new home on the Pala reservation. Abandoned since the 1980's, it had severely deteriorated. JAG removed the non-historic additions and restored the entire house to the period of its early use. Because of its unique bolting method of the prefabricated wood stud and joist system, a tubular steel structural frame was introduced to seismically stabilize the structure while maintaining the character of its unique exposed construction method.
