U. S. Terminal Annex Post Office .
Los Angeles . CA

Previously known as the Los Angeles US Postal Service Terminal Annex Facility, JAG Architects assisted Johnson Fain Partners in the transformation of this historic building. The property underwent major restoration in preparation for its opening as an "Infomart" in early 2001. JAG inspected, surveyed and documented the existing conditions. The team was careful to preserve all historic character while adding high-speed fiber-optic cables and

communications equipment throughout. According to John Ash,  “the project funding depended on our work to maintain the historic features of the building so that the developers could receive a $4 million historic preservation tax credit.” The vacant, 500,000 square foot, postal facility, therefore underwent extensive renovations to attract high-tech,  telecommunications tenants. The goal was to continue Los Angeles' emergence as a leading

technology center. The project received numerous design awards from the LA Conservancy and the California Preservation Foundation. “It’s a great historic structure,” architect Scott Johnson said of the building near Union Station, Olvera Street and Chinatown. “It’s really at the historic core of downtown Los Angeles, and "its restoration and adaptive re-use adds a strong additional piece to what’s going on in the area.”
